Betchworth Castle was built in the 11th century by Robert Fitz Gilbert to be used as an earthwork fortress. in 1379 Sir John Fitzalan turned it into a stone castle. in the 15th century the castle was rebuilt by Sir Thomas Browne.
In the 18th, 19th century some of the castle was demolished so the materials could be used elsewhere. As there was no one living in Betchworth Castle permanently, it eventually fell into ruins over the years.
For the past 50 years it has been fenced off from the public for safety reasons as the structure is insecure.
